Art Is Everywhere: How the Husky Arts Program Inspires Creativity in All of Us
Art touches all our lives, often in unexpected ways. At Sparks Florist, we see it in the vibrant floral arrangements our designers create, the luxurious handmade soap crafted by our team member Tracy, the ornaments handcrafted from recycled materials by Libby, another talented team member, and even the melodies sung by local artist and team member Karrie O’Neill, who brings life to our space through music. Every week, the Reno Wind Symphony rehearses in our Design Center, filling it with creativity.
This universal connection to art is why the Husky Arts Program at Hunsberger Elementary holds such a special place in our hearts. Like us, this program recognizes that creativity is essential. It gives students the tools to tell their stories, explore their potential, and gain confidence—all through art.
Building Creativity Beyond the Classroom
In elementary schools, visual art education is often woven into the general classroom curriculum, with grade-level teachers incorporating creative projects alongside core subjects. However, dedicated visual art programs, like those in middle and high schools, aren’t a standard part of the elementary school experience. To enrich students’ exposure to the arts, many schools rely on the dedication of outside organizations, parent volunteers, and special initiatives.
At Hunsberger Elementary, the Husky Arts Program exemplifies how a passionate community can come together to enhance creative learning. Entirely volunteer-run, this program provides students with hands-on lessons in color theory, shading, photography, and more—building a strong foundation that students carry into secondary education and beyond.
Through this program, fifth-graders can confidently explain the difference between warm and cool colors, describe tints and shades, and create stunning works of art using complementary colors. It’s a testament to how creativity flourishes when children are given the tools and encouragement to explore their artistic potential.
When Art Brings a Community Together
Last year’s Fine Arts Night transformed Hunsberger Elementary into a vibrant gallery, showcasing the creativity of every student. With free admission to ensure accessibility, more than 200 people attended, filling the multipurpose room with pride and joy. Every classroom contributed up to 60 pieces of artwork, while interactive art stations allowed attendees to create alongside the students. The event illustrated the power of art to strengthen community bonds.
A Volunteer-Driven Labor of Love
The Husky Arts Program thrives because of its dedicated volunteers. These parents, many of whom had never taught art before, step into classrooms with lesson plans and art supplies in hand. They teach everything from clay sculpting to photography, all while fostering a sense of connection and teamwork.
One volunteer shared how the experience transformed her: “I pushed myself outside of my comfort zone and discovered a passion I didn’t even know I had. Watching the students’ creativity blossom has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.”
Flowers and Art: How You Can Support the Program
Just as our florists create beauty with blooms, the Husky Arts Program relies on tools to bring students’ visions to life. That’s where the 12 Months of Flowers fundraising program comes in. Each card sold helps fund essential materials:
➡️ 50 cards cover the printing costs for the photography unit for a full year.
➡️ Another 50 cards fund all the glaze for the clay unit, turning pottery into masterpieces.
➡️ 50 more ensure classrooms have enough watercolor paper for an entire year.
By purchasing a card, you’re giving more than flowers—you’re giving the gift of creativity, confidence, and community.
Why Art Matters for Every Child—and Every Community
Art is so much more than a hobby. It develops fine motor skills, boosts decision-making and inventiveness, and builds self-expression. For children, it’s a chance to explore their identities, gain confidence, and even discover career possibilities. For the Hunsberger community, it’s been a way to connect families, foster friendships, and nurture the next generation of creators.
At Sparks Florist, we know the value of art firsthand. It’s in every bouquet we design, every hand-crafted ornament, and every song sung or played in our Design Center. We believe that creativity isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential. And through programs like Husky Arts, we can ensure that every child has the chance to experience it.
